For those people who spend their working days in SEO, copywriting or blog design, there are plenty of opportunities out of our every dayworking lives to see what goes into successful company sites and what stops the plain old average internet sites from becoming great.
As someone who always put effort into writing copy for company sites, I find the most annoying part of the job is seeing companies obsess over link building or SEO whilst not putting any attention into the actual content on their urls. Many website owners are so concerned with what they see as the magic bullet of search engine optimization that they ignore all of the traditional and sensible rules of marketing and business . This article will suggest 5 basic things which companies should think about when they are working on their business site.
(1) Write yourself some snazzy page titles which are thrilling and actionable.
Yes, it’s good to get keywords into the title of the page title, but even better is a page title which entices the reader and calls people to the site.
Ensure that your page title is the type of thing you would want to have a read of if you saw it in a magazineWhat’s more, try and get most of the titles to be actionable. In other words, use words like explore, search, learn, find, discover, try or buy. While you are constructing the page title, try to tell the reader and potential customer what they will be going through once on that page.
(2) Ensure that your product descriptions and body text are written well – make them sell!
This may well seem stupid but you’d be amazed how many internet sites there are out there which are trying to sell products or services with written content which would make you burst out laughing.
You’ve never seen them? That’s thanks to their apocalyptically bad content and as such they are sitting in the dark depths of the search engine, hidden from sight. If you’re hawking products, make people really want to own them. What is it, why do I need it? Why does my life feel incomplete without them? How would they benefit my life? What is their unique selling point?
(3) Don’t go over the top with those written content and product descriptions
Having said all that in the previous point, you also will need to remember that your content and your site need to be precise, concise and not intimidate people with short attention spans (there are many such people out there). Attempt a balance between appealing, well phrased content and not mucking around with on obvious marketing language or business speak. You’ll only get two or three minutes to steal your potential customer’s attention and convert that to a sale, don’t waste it. Instead be exact using an old fashioned system of description, content and headline and not forgetting your sales call to action.
(4) Make sure that each and every page has a clear and well markedthrough-flow so that the customer can get hold of you easily.
Everyone likes to be able to find more information. Have email links on each page. In addition people like a bit of assurance that there are real people at the end of the phone, that you are a business made up of real people. Have your phone numbers on the page too. The same goes for access to your social media links. Put them all around your websites?too. It reassures the potential customer and holds lines of communication going.
(5) Ensure your website never stops running really well.
Forget Search Engine Optimization?and backlinks, how about simply checking your site is fast enough in its actual day-to-day operating and for its click through speed. Try and test it from as many computers and as many locations as possible. If the site is slow, people will depart quickly. If you find it is slow, talk with your hosting company and also explore around the internet for any number of tools which can help you quicken everything up.
After you’ve done all of this, by all means think about backlinks and Search Engine Optimisation, about hiring link builders and an SEO copywriter ?- they are important too. Just don’t forget the old fashioned marketing basics.
